East Devon

The present East Devon branch of Devon Birds was formed in 1977 and represents the County east of the River Exe. This includes the pebblebed heathland of East Devon Commons, an important and rare heathland habitat, as well as the coastland and estuaries of the Exe, Otter and Axe.

Devon Birds has supported the establishment of various structures including the hide  on the Axe Estuary Wetland Reserve, the Field Studies Centre and hides at Colyford Common Reserve and at Blackhole Marsh.

Birdwatching field trips are organised twice monthly, some being half-day walks and others full-day activities. The field trips are suitable for prospective members as well as the more experienced. All attending should be suitably dressed for the weather conditions and have a reasonable degree of fitness as the terrain can sometimes be rough. Each walk has a designated leader who has knowledge of the area and of the birds to be seen in the various habitats. Field trips are advertised in the Society’s annual Programme, in The Harrier and on this website and typically range over areas of South and East Devon, Dartmoor, the Somerset Levels and Dorset.
