Okehampton – Sourton
Walked the railway this morning. Highlight was my first Garden Warbler of the year, singing invisibly from within Meldon Quarry. Also present were Redpoll, Redstart, Marsh Tit, Treecreeper and Wheatear.
Exeter to Exminster & Turf
A cycle to Turf from Exeter today. Sand Martins everywhere with 80+ Riverside Country Park, along with 10+ House Martin & 5 Swift. 800+ Sand Martin over Exminster with a few Swallow. 3 Spoonbill, Marsh Harrier, Common Sandpiper, 7 Teal on the marsh. 19 Whimbrel from Turf. Small numbers of Chiffchaff, Blackcap along cycle path. 3 singing Sedge & 6+ singing Reed Warbler on Exminster.
Appledore Side of the Burrows around the flooded Pond bit
Whitethroats. A glorious sight to see.
Braunton, across the Marsh Road to the Burrows, down the American Road and home along the Toll Road. 52 Species recorded. Reed, Sedge, Cetti’s, and Willow Warblers in good numbers with Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs, Whitethroats and a fine male Lesser Whitethroat. Swallow, Sand and House Martin plus Swift – one over the reserve, the other keeping close company with a Red Kite near the Sandy Lane car park. At Crow point several waders out on the sandbank mid river included several of each of Whimbrel, Bar-trailed Godwit, Oystercatcher, Dunlin, Ringed Plover (1) and Curlew – one of which had yellow bling on both legs above the knee.
Lesser Whitethroat and Garden Warbler singing from hedges by the canal path bear to Turf. 30+ Whimbrel over and 3 Spoonbills.
Golden Oriole?? Craneham Hill Buckland Brewer N. Devon
My wife saw a bird with bright yellow underisde and dark wings, which flew with undulating flight from an oak tree in a wooded area to another tree across the road. She didn’t have binoculars with her but has had a look at Collins and believes it was a Golden Oriole
Bowling Green Marsh
This afternoon at BGM. An overfly of 2 Spoonbills, Little Egret 1, Teal, Wigeon, LBBG’s, Pied Wagtails, Greenfinches, Common Sandpipers, a Sparrowhawk, Swallows, House and Sand martins, Oystercatchers,
This morning a Whinchat and several Stonechats over Trendlebeare Down. Garden Warblers, Blackcaps, Mistle thrushes, GSW, Chiffchaffs, Willow warblers, Pied Flycatchers, Goldcrests, Grey Wagtails.

At West End 11.45 am
27 Whimbrel in off the sea, they then flew east along the beach last seen at Otter mouth looking to land.
This Chiffchaff gave me a heart stopping moment until it was properly seen.

Egyptian Goose Dart Farm
A wet day out at BGM and Dart Farm. Not much to see from the BGM hide. One Egyptian Goose near the fishing pond at Dart Farm.
Trendlebere Down & River Bovey
A walk from Yarner Wood car park down into the Bovey Valley yesterday. Cuckoo on Trendlebere, 2 Pied Flycatchers (one a very brown male, calling and singing, and with very white male wing flashes. 3 Willow Warbler singing, 15+ Blackcap singing, Dipper and Grey Wagtail.
Earlier at Stover, Willow Warbler singing, one male Tufted remaining & Marsh Tit.
Yesterday morning on the Down. At least 3 Cuckoos, Tree and Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Linnets, Goldfinches, Willow Warblers, 3 Wheatears, a Buzzard and a Green Woodpecker.
Warren House Inn
My first cuckoo of the year in the valley South of Warren House, along with a Wheatear and several Stonechat, Whinchat and Meadow Pipits.
This morning on the Down at least 3 Cuckoos,Tree Pipits,Skylarks, Linnets, Goldfinches, Willow Warblers, 3 Wheatears and a Green Woodpecker.
Trendlebere Down & River Bovey
A walk down from the Yarner Wood car park into Bovey Valley today. Cuckoo on the Down, two singing Pied Flycatchers in the valley, one very brown but clearly a male due to song and strength of white wing flashes. Maybe a first year male? Lots of Blackcaps, 3 Willow Warblers singing, along with Dipper and Grey Wagtail.
At lunchtime today, 2 Cattle Egrets were amongst cattle close to Station Road.
North side of Taw Estuary & Horsey
Just a single Redshank now remaining on the north side of the Taw Estuary
On Horsey at least 5 Whimbrel, 26 Bar-tailed Godwits, several Shelduck, 3 Dunlin & 8 Cormorants. Common Whitethroats now very vocal & showing well. So far have heard 3 Lesser Whitethroats over a distance of 10 miles.
At least 11 vocal and mobile Whimbrel along the beach at high tide this morning with 31 Oystercatcher, a Grey Plover and a Bar-tailed Godwit.
At least 6 male Whitethroats back on territory
2 Red-legged Partridge in the wheatfield and 4 Swallow overhead also of note.
Wembury Point 24 April
7 whimbrel feeding at evening high tide; also first whitethroat of the year.
The same group of whimbrel were also present on 21 April, accompanied by 3 summer plumage bar-tailed godwits.
