Plym Estuary & Saltram

Two smart summer-plumaged Black-tailed Godwits on Blaxton Meadow together with 3 Greenshanks, 2 Common Sandpipers and the building Curlew & Redshank flocks. Also sum-plum Mediterranean Gull, 2 Bullfinches and a a pair of Mute Swans with a cygnet.

On the 7th, a Sand Martin with 60-70 other hirundines and Swifts.

Woolacombe Mediterranean Gulls

Over 100 mostly adults on the sands and rocks adjacent to the outflow pipe today along with several first summer Sandwich Terns. At least 6 were leg ringed. I got 2, Green ROLE and White 355H. So awaiting details.

Off Ilfracombe I’ve seen huge numbers of Manx Shearwater daily. Certainly increasing on previous years.

River Exe nr Powderham

An Osprey was attempting to fish in the river Exe near the Powderham cycle bridge this morning at 7:20.  It was being continually harassed by a Peregrine.  While I was watching the Osprey did manage to catch something in between being attacked.

This morning over the Down 2 Bullfinches, Willow Warblers, a Jay and a solitary Green Woodpecker along the bridle path. Several juv. Wheatears a Mistle thrush and 2 Ravens on moor top. Canada Geese on TWL. Grey Wagtail, 2 Chiffchaffs and 2 Green Woodpeckers at Loughtor Mill

Ruff Bowling Green Marsh 8th July 2023

Such a treat to see cracking birds this morning at RSPB Bowling Green Marsh . As high tide approached the birds came in from the Exe estuary to rest and preen themselves . Picking a few of the top birds on show , Ruff retaining some of its breeding plumage (Saying that most of the birds there were in breeding plumage ) , Spotted Redshank , Spoonbill , Red and Green shank , Whimbrel , Lapwing , Curlew , Bar-tailed Godwit , Grey Heron , Sandwich Tern .

Lower Tamar Lake this morning,

1 Willow Tit, 1 Marsh Tit, 2 Mute Swan, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 1m Tufted Duck, 9 Moorhen.

River Mole Valley

A flock of 300 plus finches feeding in one of the bird mix fields…….mainly Linnets but also Greenfinch,Goldfinch and Bullfinch……all frequently taking to flight by the frequent passes of 10 Swift and 30 Swallows feeding on pollinators.Elsewhere 5 juvenile Grey Wagtails,Skylark ,15 Silver Washed Fritillaries, Commas,Gatekeepers,10 Marbled Whites and Small Skippers.

Riverside to Turf Lock on river

Same pr Egyptian Geese, flocks of 50 & 100 Mute Swans, 10 to 14 Common Sandpiper (4 may have been same or different!), Shelduck with 3 & 6 ducklings, [Kingfisher at Double Locks]

Marsh Barton to Turf Hotel

Best birds of note were 85+ Mediterranean Gulls, 50+ on cattle field just south of lagoon on Exminster Marsh. Rest in a flock of 35 flying south from canal wall.

25+ Sand Martin, 8 Swift, 10+ House Martin over marsh. 3+ Juv Swallow at Turf. 4 pairs of Shelduck with young, 3, 3, 5 & 8.

At Countess Weir 2 Egyptian Gesse and a Common Sandpiper. 30+ House Martins there too, probably local birds. Whitethroat singing just south of Double Locks. Otherwise a few Reed Warbler singing, maybe 6-8 Blackcap too along route.

Exminster Marshes

High water at Turf this morning. Small flock of black-headed gulls (all adults) together with at least 2 Med gulls and about 6 Sandwich terns. Two broods of shelduck still , one pair with 3 young and another pair with 2 young. A pair of pied wagtails have successfully fledged chicks from their nest on a boat moored 120m from the shore.

From the Tarka Path at Wrafton Pond I spotted a single Marsh Harrier perched on a small tree in the reed bed. Long distance record shot.

Thornworthy and Wrafton pond

Yesterday at Thornworthy there were 30+ Siskins, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, two Goldfinches and two Yellowhammers. Later at Wrafton Pond I saw a Tufted Duck, a few Mallard, two Reed Warblers and a Cetti’s Warbler. On the Scrape and surrounding area there were: a Heron, a Little Egret, a Mute Swan and in the reed bed beyond was a single Marsh Harrier.

Huntsham near Bampton today

Huntsham near Bampton today

Two females and one male Yellowhammer seen on telephone wires near Hunstsham along with a small flock of mixed sex Common Linnet. Also heard numerous Nuthatch     and one Treecreeper spotted in a large oak tree.

Wrafton area

First stop at Wrafton Pond where a drake Pochard has appeared. Small Tit flock in the reserve with Goldcrest and several Long-tailed Tits. Several Reed Warblers singing/croaking along with Chiffchaff and Blackcap in song. Swallow, Swift and House Martin in close attendance. For the second day running, a female Marsh Harrier (first I’ve seen in the area since 3rd May) over the Sherpa reed-bed. Finally a smart male Stonechat as I left.

View from the new Taw Bridge, Barnstaple.

Lots of black headed gulls, half a dozen shelduck, a couple of GBB gulls and about 100 canada geese opposite where the Civic Centre once stood.

Yelland and Fremington..

Great White Egret with Little Egret And Several Grey Heron on Saltpill pond.    Osprey on fence post at Lower Yelland farm……The sluice gate at Saltpill pond has been replaced as sea water had been entering the pond and killing off vegetation and aquatic life……

Lower Tamar Lake

Lower Tamar Lake this morning.

2 Willow Tits 1 adult 1 juv, 6 Great Crested Grebe, 1m Tufted Duck, 6 Swift, 2 Mute Swan, 1 Grey Heron.

Note: I could only see three Great Crested Grebe on nests, the fourth was obscured due to the wind blowing the reeds about, and the nest is set well back in the reeds
