Lower Tamar Lake

Lower Tamar Lake this morning.

3 Willow Tit, 2 Marsh Tit, 2 Common Sandpiper, 1 Little Grebe, 5 Great Crested Grebe plus 3 juv, 2 Mute Swan, 2 Dunnock, 22 Candad Geese.

Note, The bird feeders are now out at the five feeding stations as well as the hide.

Prawle Point seawatch 0700-0930

Good westward passage of seabirds in clear weather between drizzle spells:

  • Manx/Balearic Shearwater 788
  • Cory’s Shearwater 8
  • Great Skua 1
  • Fulmar 7
  • Kittiwake 3
  • Common Scoter 1
  • Storm petrel 1
  • Guillemot 3
  • Razorbill 2

Plus lots of Gannets, a couple of Great Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls, Willow warbler by car park, Stonechat and  Kestrel

Escot Park – Spotted Flycatcher

Two juvenile Spotted Flycatchers in Escot Park this morning and a juvenile Green Woodpecker.

Yealm Estuary

This morning was 2 Whimbrel with Curlews, 1 Oystercatcher, 10 Greenshank, 1 Redshank, 4 Common Sandpiper, 1 Kingfisher and a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Kestrels 2, Green Woodpecker 1, Skylarks, numerous Linnets, Stonechats many juvenile birds about. Just a single Raven and a solitary juv. Wheatear.

Two juv Yellow-legged Gulls on Blaxton Meadow this morning and 9 Greenshanks there. Also, 9+ Swifts, Green Woodpecker, Common Sandpiper & a Clouded Yellow.

Dawlish Warren

High tide at Dawlish Warren this morning. 150+ (30+ Juv) Sandwich Tern, 29 Common Tern (3 Juv), 2 Arctic Tern (Ad & 2cy), 2 Little Tern (Ad & Juv), 50 Dunlin, 28+ Ringed Plover, 15 Sanderling, 3 Grey Plover, Knot (Sum Plum), Whimbrel, 4 Common Scotor, Juv Med Gull, Stonechat Imm, 15+ Linnet, 5+ Juv Willow Warbler, Ad M Kestrel.

East Soar

Bit of movement this morning with 4 Ringed Plover, 37 Swallow, 8 Willow Warbler, 6 Wheatear on Bolt Head & House Martin. Also: Bullfinch & 110 Linnet.

Hobbys at Slapton Ley

Three hobbys over the tallest trees seen from the viewing platform at Ireland Bay, Slapton Ley, today at 1300hrs.  One came close to show rufus underparts. Good numbers of house martins and the occasional swift. Also two chiffchaff, a single common sandpiper, 40 plus mute swan at Stokeley Bay two with a cygnet in attendance, plenty of Great-crested grebes, but none with young, tufted duck, mallard, canada geese and cormorants.

Seaton Wetlands

This am, adult breeding plumage Wood Sandpiper on Colyford Common Scrape with 2 Common Sandpipers, Greenshank, 3 Whimbrels, c. 30 Curlews, 9 Lapwings, 2 Teals, 8 Shovelers & 2 juv Wheatears.

Bowling Green Marsh, Goosemoor, Clyst VP & Goat Walk

A good visit today with the highlights being F/Imm Garganey at BG, Osprey from Goat Walk, though distant & Ruff at BG but also subsequently Clyst VP & Goat Walk. Redshank 200+, Curlew 195+, Blackwit 208+, Whimbrel 10+, Dunlin 6+, Greenshank, Teal 14, & Shelduck 17 Imm on BG. Water Rail & Lapwing 17 on Goosemoor. Willow Warbler Juv on walk to Clyst VP. Also 2 Reed Warbler, 15+ House Martin, 4+ Sand Martin, 2 Swift.

Kingfisher & Kestrel at Countess Weir on cycle home.

Riverside Country Park at Countess Weir

A short walk this afternoon. Up to 21 House Martin nests overlooking the area, certainly 4 still active with young. 4 Swift, Whitethroat, 18+ House Sparrows, a Coot on the river (more unusual there). Otherwise not too much else.

Old Torrington Road Barnstaple

A flock of 8 long tailed tits and 4 blue tits feeding around my garden this morning. The sparrows seen the other day seem mostly to have moved on.

Exminster marshes

hobby across the fields this morning. Lots of swallows following the tractor cutting the rushes in the roadside fields. Three little egrets. Two black swans on the Exe at Turf. Two kestrels.
