East Soar

Not expecting a lot on NW winds but did get; 2 Sparrowhawk, 31 Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 280 Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, 15 Long-tailed Tit, Bullfinch, 80 Goldfinch & 20 Siskin. No thrushes apart from one Song Thrush.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

A few ducks on Blaxton Meadow at high tide, this morning, including: 7 Wigeon, 8 Shelducks & a Teal. Also, today: c25 Turnstones, Common Sandpiper, 6 Greenshanks, 2 Snipe, 2 redhead Goosanders, 2 Kingfishers, 2 Sparrowhawks, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 3 Stonechats, 2+ Siskins & 8 Roe Deer.

Escot Park – New Bird

Not sure why this bird has eluded me before now, but this morning at Escot Park I finally got views of a Lesser Redpoll high in a tree by the lake. My 83rd species for this patch. Also seen 4 Skylarks, Grey Heron and the pale morph Buzzard.

Exminster Marshes

On a brief visit yesterday afternoon we had a Marsh Harrier quartering the reeds along the Exe near Turf, thanks to Tim Ridgeway for pointing it out to us. Common Sandpipers, Blackwits, Curlew, a Kingfisher and a couple of hundred Canada Geese.

Berry Head

Seawatch highlights 07.30-10.50: 685 Great Shearwaters (not a sniff of a Cory’s with them!), 31 Sooty, 17 Balearic & 14 Manx Shearwaters, 2 Fulmar, 22 Arctic, 1 Pomarine, 2 Long-tailed & 2 Great Skuas, 3 Puffin, 1 Merlin, 2 White-b Dolphins, 6 Porpoise and 3 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna.

Beesands Ley

Yesterday early afternoon 1 Great White Egret flew past the hide at Beesands dropping into the reeds to the right of the hide. 5 + Mediterranean Gulls over the beach with Black-headed Gulls.

Berry Head

3- 4 Ring Ouzel mostly on slope below the café, also 1 juv Hobby over meadow, 1 Merlin in off sea and >W, 2 Lesser Redpoll, 25+ Siskin, 6 Swallow, 2 House Martins, 7 Skylark, 20 + Song Thrush, 30 + Blackbirds, 15+ Chiffchaff 9 Goldcrests and 2 Firecrests.

Late post Taw at Ahsford 11th Oct

Counted 460 Canada Geese drifting up on the tide from Chivenor. Also seen 23 Wigeon and up to 20 Oystercatcher, 

Curlew, but only 3 Redshank.

Nice to see 3 Redwing in flight which headed downriver towards Chivenor

Budleigh Salterton LORP ~ No sign of the reported Osprey but plenty of Grey Mullet to be seen, Kestrel being mobbed by a Rook and a hunting Sparrowhawk were the bird of prey input.

 

6 Little Egret, Stonechat, 11 Heron, 7 pied Wagtail and one Grey, 4 Stock Dove, Water Rail calling, several meadow Pipit, 15 plus Linnet and larger numbers of Goldfinch, 6 Cetti’s warbler calling around the reserve, 11 pus Moorhen, 10 plus Mute Swan, 2 GSWP and 3 GBBG.

 

Overlooking the Exe at Exton ~ Green Woodpecker, Dunlin, Redshank, Oyster Catcher, Curlew, GBBG, Little Egret.

 

Haldon Forest Park ~ a single Hawfinch, Siskin, GSWP and good sightings of Crossbill, two flocks seen of 14 plus and 17 plus birds and numerous views of smaller numbers.

 

Last evening at South Brent the Barn owl I have heard for the previous two evenings showed well as it flew across my orchard into an out building.

From  0800-1130 this morning at least 20 Ring Ouzels seen. A further visit this afternoon 1530-1730 produced 17 Ring Ousel, an amazing passage figure for Cadover also several Redwings and Mistle thrushes. Reed Buntings 2, Coal tits 5, Green Woodpecker 1,Kestrel 1, Ravens 3, Chaffinches 3, Heron 1, Snipe 1 (on drying pond)

This morning a solitary female Ring Ousel eating Ivy berries. A Green Woodpecker, a Kestrel, Chiffchaffs, Mistle thrush, small flocks of Redwing overhead, numerous Swallows.

LORP Budleigh Salterton

Osprey flew in from South Farm direction at about 4pm and made a number of unsuccessful fishing attempts on the lagoon North of footbridge. Moved onto river and flew off with supper soon after. Kingfisher diving from new footbridge was a bonus.

Ivybridge ~ Redwings

A flock of 31 Redwings seen over Ivybridge this morning headed towards the moors.

Back home at South Brent a single Redwing over the house and periodic sightings of two Mistle Thrush. A very vocal Barn owl calling last evening around 8 pm.

Riverside Country Park at Countess Weir end

Morning visit as mist cleared. Common Sandpiper by road bridge. 15 Teal, F Stonechat, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail and 3 Meadow Pipit were the best bits.
