Red Kite. Buckland Brewer

A Red Kite drifting north east over Buckland Brewer at 0830 this morning, being mobbed by crows and jackdaws.

Red Kite at Northam

This afternoon a Red Kite flew eastwards from Northam over the River Torridge towards Westleigh harried by three Herring Gulls. Despite flying into the wind it was far too agile to be bothered by the gulls but provided good views of forked tail and talons.

4 RING OUZELS a GREEN WOODPECKER  a and a FIELDFARE.Feeding on berries in second field below car park along hedgerow/tree line. Seen between 1pm and 1.30pm

Great White Egrets – Hartland Point, Devon

Great White Egrets – Hartland Point, Devon

Eighteen (18) Great White Egrets observed flying southwest past Hartland Point on 10th October 2023 at about 15:00 hours. All birds appeared to be adult in non breeding colours.

Soar Mill Valley & Southdown Farm

Fair bit happening this morning; Ring Ouzel, 200 Swallow, 3 House Martin, 600 Herring Gull, 2 Sparrowhawk, 152 Alba Wagtail (min.40 White Wagtail), Whinchat, 10 Chiffchaff, 7 Teal, 170 Woodpigeon east, 4 Stock Dove east, 100 Linnet & Siskin – bit on the windy side!

Dartmoor

Dartmoor yesterday 15th October

 

Picking up the moor above Bickington, at Easton Lane Cross 3 Meadow Pipit, 13 Linnet, 2 Buzzard and a female Bullfinch.

 

Soussons area ~ 2 GSWP, good numbers of Chaffinch, 3 Stonechat, Crossbill flying over, 3 Pied Wagtail, single Skylark, Red Fox and a magnificent Red Deer stag enjoying the sunshine.

 

Powder Mill ~ 100 plus Golden Plover, Mistle Thrush, Pied Wagtails, large Chaffinch flock.

 

Cadover ~ Numerous sightings of Ring Ouzels, 43 sightings recoded of I suspect around 12 birds, 8 Mistle Thrush, female Kestrel, Buzzard, Meadow Pipits, Stonechat, Green Woodpecker, Grey and Pied Wagtail and 2 Goldcrest.

 

This morning at home at South Brent five Redwing flying over.

1m Goosander in eclipse, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Little Grebe, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Mute Swans, 10 Canada Geese.

Velator reserve

Late morning visit: near the entrance the first Meadow Pipit of the autumn and then 3 Redwings in the reserve. Yesterday’s ringing session was busy early on, then odds and ends later, including 16 Blue Tits, 7 of which were in the first net I came to on the first round! 2 Goldcrests, 1 Blackcap, 1 Bullfinch, 1 Coal Tit, 1 GSW, and 2 Kingfishers were the best of the rest.

Cadover and Crownhill Down areas

Brisworthy Burrows: 7+ Ring Ouzels, Water Rail (by flooded path), Red-legged Partridge, 17 Golden Plover over, Goosander, 12 Fieldfare, 20 Redwing.

Wotter: 5+ Ring Ouzel. Viewed from bridleway between Wotter and Lee Moor. Also 2 Swallow.

Crownhill Down: 5 Golden Plover, 4 Dunlin, Ringed Plover.

Late afternoon, of note: 1 ringtail Hen Harrier, c60 Siskins, c40 Meadow Pipits, 1 Crossbill & 6 Mistle Thrushes.

Ouzels at Vitifer

21 ring ouzels still feeding on hawthorn berries at Vitifer Mines.

Up to six in the bush at a time.  All 21 seen in flight together and then in a tall tree together after a sparrowhawk rattled through the feeding bush and put them all up.

Couple each of fieldfare and redwing also, plus mixed flock of coal and great tit with goldcrest and chiffchaff.

East Soar

Not expecting a lot on NW winds but did get; 2 Sparrowhawk, 31 Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 280 Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, 15 Long-tailed Tit, Bullfinch, 80 Goldfinch & 20 Siskin. No thrushes apart from one Song Thrush.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

A few ducks on Blaxton Meadow at high tide, this morning, including: 7 Wigeon, 8 Shelducks & a Teal. Also, today: c25 Turnstones, Common Sandpiper, 6 Greenshanks, 2 Snipe, 2 redhead Goosanders, 2 Kingfishers, 2 Sparrowhawks, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 3 Stonechats, 2+ Siskins & 8 Roe Deer.
