Yesterday afternoon: Grey Plover, Dunlin, Redshank, Greenshank, Curlew Sandpiper, Blackwits, Teal, Shelduck, Mallard, Moorhen, Lapwing, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Mute Swan, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Swallow, Stonechats, Meadow Pipits, Mediterranean Gull, Common Gull, Canada Geese, Pheasant.

Bowling Green Marsh

11.30-13.00 – Good numbers of Bar and Black Tail Godwit, Pintail, Shoveler, Wigeon and Teal. Kingfisher, Stonechat, Curlew, Redshank, Greenshank, Dunlin, Lapwing. 3 Avocet, a Whimbrel, several snipe. Marsh Harrier over. Most unusual was a female Whinchat by the viewing platform

Today’s tally:  Ring Ouzel, Song Thrush 26, Blackbird 19, Robin 61, Chiffchaff 27, Blackcap 2, Goldcrest 3, Skylark 130, Rock Pipit 6, Green Woodpecker, Stock Dove 16 inc.12W, Starling 85 (40E 45N), Jackdaw 130 (77W 53E), Teal 9, Pintail 2, Bullfinch male, Siskin 4, Goldfinch 50, Linnet 70.

Non-avian: 2 Sika stags, Small White, Small Copper & 33 Red Admiral.

Caen Estuary, Horsey, Braunton Marshes

As well as the usual suspects this morning on the Caen Estuary there were 8 Swallows migrating south. On Horsey still a single Wheatear, a ‘stand’ of 14 Little egrets (only 12 in the photo) & some new arrivals including 7 Pintail, 6 Grey Plover, & an increase in the number of Wigeon, Lapwing & Golden Plover since yesterday. 45 species counted yesterday.On Braunton Marshes 4 Cettis & a Water Rail squealing like a little piglet!

Heanton Court area and South Zeal area

This afternoon around Heanton Court this Buzzard flew over the Pub and back towards the A361 towards Braunton. Later while I was near South Zeal I saw a number of Yellowhammers possibly 10 or 12, a smaller number of Long tailed tits, two Jays, a Buzzard and a few Chaffinches.

Exminster Marsh

A morning visit, which was wet at times. Few waders, 7 Blackwit, 3 Curlew, 3 Snipe & a Lapwing was the grand total.

300+ Teal, 38+ Shoveler, 6 Wigeon, single Pintail, 70+ Mallard, 6 Gadwall, 3 Tufted, 2 Little Grebe & 80 Coot.

Otherwise F/Imm Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Singing Cetti’s, Reed Bunting, Chiffchaff, 4+ Skylark, 3 Meadow Pipit, 2 Stonechat & 2 Grey Wagtail.

Excellent views of a quartering Short-eared Owl this afternoon at the headland at the far end of Dawlish Warren. Even though some walkers disturbed it, it was still around when we left at 4.30pm today.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

A Cattle Egret dropped onto Blaxton Meadow on this morning’s high tide, and also there – Goosander (redhead), 12 Wigeon, Black-tailed Godwit, 11+ Dunlins, 11 Greenshanks, 2 Mediterranean gulls (2nd & 3rd cys). In addition, Great Spotted & 3+ Green Woodpeckers, Grey Wagtail, 2 Stonechats, Siskin, Kingfisher, 33 Turnstones, 2 Common Sandpipers, 5 Snipe, Common Gull (1st cy) & 7 Roe Deer.

Red Kites over A361 Link Road, South Molton

18th October along the A361 from Barnstaple to South Molton there were 3 Red Kites over Bremridge Wood, just after the viaduct over the River Bray.
