Taw Estuary

What turned out to be a  “Mediterranean” walk from Barnstaple to Home Farm Marsh produced a Med. Gull among the B-Hs just downstream from the bypass bridge, three Spoonbills feeding on the N. shore approx. half a mile further downstream, seven Cattle Egrets on Penhill Marsh, a Great Egret initially on the sandbanks off Fremington Quay, but later moving to Saltpill Pond allowing a much better view, and a Glossy Ibis in Fremington Creek.

South Brent

South Brent

This morning gave the first real signs of the annual autumnal Wood pigeon migration over South Brent, several flocks 15 plus to 40 plus birds over all heading west.

Late this afternoon a huge flock passed Brent Hill again heading west.

A very colourful male Sparrowhawk landed on the fence outside the kitchen window this afternoon, eyeing up the feed station.

Velator reserve

I was thinking as I walked around this morning that it had been quite while since I had seen a Marsh Harrier. Of course as soon as I scanned South to look at the reed-bed at Sherpa, a dark female Marsh Harrier started quartering the reeds! In the reserve probably 70 Goldfinch and the first Greenfinch of the autumn. Still a couple of noisy Water Rails (saw 3 the other day), and plenty of Tits.
