Tarka trail Bideford to Penhill & return….

Peregrine with breakfast on Torridge bridge.    Kestrel hovering over Gaia Trust,Great Egret on Saltpill pond…3 king-fishers , Isley , Saltpill and Bideford east…..no sign of all those Cattle Egrets…..

On the late afternoon (very) high tide: 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Common Sandpipers, 7 Greenshanks, 7 Dunlins, Mediterranean Gull (ad-w), Kingfisher & Raven.

Late Swift over Braunton

Looking up to watch a Hummingbird Hawk-moth fly off over East Hill, Braunton, we saw three high-flying Swallows hawking for insects and one lone southbound Swift!

Wembury Point

A Wryneck found in the Radar Station Compound this morning at Wembury Point, no access so viewed from perimeter fence only, mobile and elusive but showing well at times. Wheatear and 2 juvenile Green Woodpeckers also here.

The Beach is still drawing in the waders – a flock of 13 Knot dropped in for c.10 minutes before carrying on west, also present were 2 Redshank, 2 Whimbrel, 1 Curlew, 4 Sanderling, 4+Ringed Plover, 4+Dunlin, Turnstone and Oystercatcher. 4 Mediterranean Gulls (3 juveniles) also here.

Exminster Marshes

Belated report from yesterday evening (30th Aug.).

On the recently flooded scrapes viewed from the canal bank were c80 curlew, 2+ whimbrel, 2 black-tailed godwits and a little grebe. A green sandpiper flew up from behind the scrapes to be joined by another and then the 2 flew towards Powderham marsh. Two redshank on the lagoon.

Large flock (c30) blue tits and long-tailed tits along the railway path. With the flock were one blackcap and chiffchaffs (c5). Three yellow wagtails with c6 pied wagtails amongst grazing cattle. Next to Station road 11 cattle egrets.

Another tit flock in the trees alongside the cycle path. A single reed warbler in reeds on the canal. A few sand martins at Turf.

Soar and Plym Estuary & Saltram

Soar the morning proved a bit cool & damp but managed: 4 Tree Pipits, 2 Yellow Wagtails, Whinchat, 4 Wheatears, single Sedge & Reed Warblers, 12 Whitethroats, 8 Chiffchaffs, 7 Blackcaps, Goldcrest, Grey Wagtail, Sparrowhawk & a Roe Deer.

On Blaxton Meadow, this afternoon: Knot, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Common Sandpiper, 10+ Mediterranean Gulls (5+ adults, 2 3rd cy & 3 1st cy), 7 Dunlins, 12 Oystercatchers & a Kingfisher; also redhead Goosander on the river & Sparrowhawk nearby.

Hoopoe in Monkerton, Exeter (update)

HOOPOE 13:15 29/08/2023, Monkerton, Exeter (SX965938), 1 x adult bird. Following the initial sighting earlier in the day, the bird returned to my garden to feed on leatherjackets it found in the lawn. Spent half an hour or so feeding before departing. Better images on this occasion…
