Ilfracombe Pier

A 1st Winter Glaucous Gull dropped in to the storm drain at Cheyne. A fairly darkish individual not very dissimilar from the juv Herring gulls. Yesterday at dusk Purple Sandpiper numbers roosting at the pier rocks up to 20.

Porpoise have been feeding close into the pier in front of the anglers. I guess chasing the shoals of mullet that have now arrived.

Guillemot on the Taw

Guillemot on the Taw

Ashford Strand 10:25 am, falling tide, a Guillemot like bird was drifting down river just offshore, near the old railway bridge. No camera so sketch included. Gulls were stooping on it and it was diving to avoid their attention. When it surfaced it flapped its wings which were revealed as short & stubby, and auk-like. Juvenile? Saw Rob Jutsum earlier heading that way so hopefully he’ll have seen it.

Woolacombe

Woolacombe

This afternoon 4 Red-throated divers were feeding from Grunta to Morte point. So there were probably more round the north side.

In the middle of the bay amoung a large amount of Larids a single large seaduck, by its jizz i would say its the Surf Scoter still.

A juv Whooper Swan passed Morte Stone, headed south then landed on the sea about 2km off the bay.

Surprised to see and hear a Skylark in full song for several minutes in a field below Brent Hill this morning. Can’t recall hearing one sing in December before.

RED BREASTED FLYCATCHER by the Lockkeepers cottage Exeter Canal this morning 25th December 2023

Very good views at about 25m with 8×32 bins. Chiffchaff size, dumpy with clear eye ring, clean pale below, olive grey head and back with a hint of orange on side of throat. Tail occasionally cocked up and white showing on side of tail.

No photo taken. I have seen this species in Estonian and Poland in the past 10 years.

A Black Redstart on sea front, just opposite the lifeboat station, late afternoon today. Very dingy light, so not much colour, but probably the fem/juv type seen a couple of weeks ago at the same spot (thanks Paul Reynolds).
