Firecrest Woodbury

Firecrest  Visited my garden in Woodbury 26/12/2023 mid morning feeding in bushes. Watched for about 10 minutes and then it returned about an hour later.

Brent Hill

Surprised to see and hear a Skylark in full song for several minutes in a field below Brent Hill this morning. Can’t recall hearing one sing in December before.

Great White Egret, Swimbridge

Great White Egret in the field opposite Archipark, Swimbridge, at midday. Flew off towards Filleigh. MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL.

RED BREASTED FLYCATCHER by the Lockkeepers cottage Exeter Canal this morning 25th December 2023

Very good views at about 25m with 8×32 bins. Chiffchaff size, dumpy with clear eye ring, clean pale below, olive grey head and back with a hint of orange on side of throat. Tail occasionally cocked up and white showing on side of tail.

No photo taken. I have seen this species in Estonian and Poland in the past 10 years.

Devon Goosander count

The synchronised dawn Goosander roost count last Saturday 16 December located 206 birds on 14 sites across Devon, with zero counts at 10 other sites visited. The highest counts were at Meeth Quarry (54), Lower Tamar Lake (39), Blackhill Quarry and Avon Dam (both 24) and Venford (18). The overall  proportion of adult males at 41% was higher than usual. Thanks to all participants.

Sidmouth

A Black Redstart on sea front, just opposite the lifeboat station, late afternoon today. Very dingy light, so not much colour, but probably the fem/juv type seen a couple of weeks ago at the same spot (thanks Paul Reynolds).

Plym Estuary & Saltram

Water Rail was perhaps the highlight on this morning’s visit; also, Jack Snipe, just 4 Snipe, 450+ Dunlins, 4 Greenshanks, Black-tailed Godwit, Teal, c20 Wigeon, 2+ Green Woodpeckers & a Sparrowhawk.

Radford Woods

A short walk around the section of wet woodland below White Lady Road this morning turned up 6 Teal, a Sparrowhawk, 3 Chiffchaffs, 3 Firecrests, 3 Goldcrests, 9 Redwings and 2 Bullfinches.

Fremington Pill….

Glossy Ibis , 3 feeding in stream close to sluice….Spoonbill , adult feeding at end of pill close to Fremington quay.Black tailed Godwits , 15….A stranded Guillemot on the rocks at the quay was attacked by a Crow but managed to make it back to the stream…

Skern, Northam Burrows

Lesser scaup still present on the lake at Northam Burrows and I  saw a ringed Curlew on the Skern which would be nice to know a bit more about if anyone knows about the different colour rings ?

Exminster Marsh

Highlights of a walk along the tow path to Turf were 4 mergansers (2m, 2f) south of the lock and a snow goose amongst the Canada geese in the fields close to the lock. Also a hybrid goose (white head and greyish body) amongst the Canada geese close to the car park

Red Kite near Cadover Bridge on December 18, 2023.

One Red Kite watched for 5 minutes about half a mile from Cadover Bridge, on the road between the bridge and the T junction leading to Wotter and Shaugh Prior.

5 Lesser Scaup 3m 2f, 1 Drake Merganser, 23 Goosander 8m 15f, 2 Cormorant, 3 Tufted Duck 2m 1f, 3 Wigeon 2m 1f.

Stover

A duck feeding trip was also fruitful for birds. 3 Goosander (2M, F), M Pochard, 9 Wigeon, 6 Shoveler, 20+ Tufted, 13+ Mandarin & Little Grebe on lake. Also 100+ Mallard, 90+ Coot, 18+ Moorhen Grey Heron & still 10 Mute Swan (Pair & 8 Imm).

Kingfisher, Marsh Tit, 2 Nuthatch, 2 Stock Dove, 2+ Siskin, 12+ Chaffinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker and numerous other small birds.
