Plym Estuary & Saltram

On the high tide: 116 Dunlin, 101 Redshank, 9 Greenshank, 5 Little Grebe, 2 Great Northern Diver drifted towards Laira bridge, 3 Goosander (2m, 1f), 52 Snipe on Blaxton meadow, 5 Ring Necked Parakeet and 2 Siskin in the Alders.

Late for Friday 5th.

Lower Tamar Lake.

42 Goosander 12m 30f, 5 Lesser Scaup 3m 2f, 1m Merganser, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Willow Tit, 3 Marsh Tit, 5 Tufted Duck 4m 1f, 4 Snipe, 2 Grey Heron, 4 Coot, 2 Wren, 3 Fieldfare.

Upper Tamar Lake.

4 Willow Tit, 22 Fieldfare, 5 Redwing, 2 Robin.

Stover Country Park +1 Photo

Stover Country Park

Today I stopped off at Stover were there were a good number of Tufted Duck, Coots and Moorhen, a few Mandarin Duck, a Kingfisher, a Great crested grebe, two male and two female Shoveler, a Grey Heron and four or five Cormorants. In the wooded area there were a few Coal tits, Blue tits, a Nuthatch, three Robins and two Long tailed tits.

West Charleton Marsh

A flooded West Charleton Marsh is looking very good at the moment with 2 Jack Snipe, 1 Common Snipe, 45 Eurasian Wigeon and 72 Eurasian Teal present today.

On the Plym Estuary and surrounding Saltram Woods today were the following: 1 Great Northern Diver, 1 Little Grebe, 4 Goosander (1 male), 500+ Dunlin, 2 Greenshank, 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 1 Common Gull, 1 female Bullfinch and 8 Turnstone.

Ilfracombe

Around Capstone this morning revealed 3 rock pipits, 4 purple sandpipers and on a rock with some oystercatchers was a rather early whimbrel. At the pier there were  2 very camera friendly shags.

Soar inc.Southdown Farm

Farmland Bird Count – 630 Skylark, 132 Cirl Bunting, 8 Yellowhammer (they move, Cirls don’t). Also: 8 Meadow Pipit, 45 Linnet, 2 Snipe, 100 Rook, 20 Starling, 2 Bullfinch.

Greenbank, Plymouth

Male Black Redstart present in my garden at 8.45am 5/01/24. Also heard yesterday morning, same time and place. Never seen a male in garden before as usually have had  female visitors each year.

This afternoon along Woolacombe Seafront and despite the hugh waves crashing onto the rocks I managed to get a few shots of a Jackdow with a lump of cheese, some Turnstones (four) seen and one of about six Oystercatchers on the rocks.

Buckland Brewer 04/01/24 at 1100

Walking westward towards Babeleigh Barton:– 2 Song Thrushes trying to outsing one another about 1/4 mile west of the village

Raven

300+ Chaffinches mostly males,  flying at tree-top height and alighting in hedges and fields on either side of the road (grid SS 2408-1205).  Poor light and flighty birds but could not find other finches and buntings.

40+ Fieldfares

Linnet flock Tarka Trail between Instow and Yelland

Huge flock of linnets – certainly 1200+ and probably near 1500, on overhead wires and feeding in waterlogged fields.  Also a Great-crested grebe and 3 Eider on the estuary.

Brixham Breakwater

A lunchtime visit in very blustery & wet conditions. 18+ Great Northern Divers, 15+ Gannet, 20+ Kittiwakes, 40+ Guillemot, 30+ Razorbill and Adult Mediterranean Gull on sea.

8 Purple Sandpiper 0n breakwater, 2 Turnstone on the beach as well as a single Rock Pipit.

On a rather wet day, Great Northern Diver, Great Crested & 3+ Little Grebes, c65 Wigeon, Goosander (redhead), Kingfisher, Mediterranean Gull (2nd cy), Black-tailed Godwit, 1+ Common Sandpiper, 18 Oystercatchers, 8 Greenshanks, 8+ Snipe, 7 Turnstones, Grey Wagtail, Bullfinch & 3 Roe Deer.

Female Goldeneye still on the pit. On the walk up, 2 Crossbill, Dipper and Marsh Tit among the regulars.
