Cory’s Shearwater

Cory’s Shearwater

Just as the Roscoff to Plymouth ferry sailed into Plymouth Sound and was heading into dock yesterday (8th Oct) l found a Cory’s Shearwater hiding on the deck, it appeared well and healthy so I relaunched it off the side of the boat and it flew off strongly towards The Breakwater.

Wryneck at Soar

Single wryneck briefly on coastal path.

Whinchat also in Soar.

Hundreds of meadow pipits, swallows, linnets and skylarks.

Several yellowhammers plus a handful of greenfinches.

Ilfracombe

Surprised to see a super flock of at least 50 Cormorants rafting off Capstone point.

Also a dark Great Skua mythering the Gannets, probably a juv that may have been around for a week or so.

At Barnstaple old bridge the long staying Yellow-legged gull has been joined by another adult. No returning leg ringed Black headed gulls as of yet.

3 Willow Tit, 1 Marsh Tit, 1 Green Sandpiper, 2 Mute Swan, 27 Moorhen, 5 Mallard, 6 Black-headed Gull, 5 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Grey Heron, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Nuthatch, 1 Grey Wagtail, 5 Coal Tit, 11 Chaffinch, 9 Blue Tit, 1m Tufted Duck, 2 Robin, 15 Coot.

Adult water rail –  Hit by range rover on school run. On the edge of South Molton EX36 4HJ    did not expect to find one on edge of town, green fields to west turned into a new build site

Plym Estuary & Saltram

Rather quiet today, but: Little Grebe, Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Common Sandpipers, 4 Turnstones, 10 Greenshanks, Kingfisher, 3 Green Woodpeckers, Sparrowhawk, 2+ Stonechats, c10 Siskins, Grey Wagtail & a Roe Deer.

Lyme Bay Cruise

After the phenomenal Cruise on Sunday with so many Shearwaters the cruise on Wednesday was rather quiet, just 2 shearwaters – 1 Balearic and 1 Manx! However a 1st winter Caspian Gull was attracted into the mass of Herring, Lesser & Great Blacked-backed Gulls behind the boat. Ringed Plover, Dunlin, i Greenshank, Redshank, Curlew, Lapwing, Shelduck, Mallard, Moorhen, GBBG’s, 1 Little Grebe, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Cormorants, Cettis Warbler and a Kingfisher.                                                                                   Also distant view of Osprey mobbed by Crows over the LORP.

During a visit at high tide this morning, on Blaxton Meadow: Yellow-legged Gull (1st cy), 5 Goosanders (redheads), Mediterranean Gull (ad-w), Black-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Dunlin, 11 Greenshanks, 16 Oystercatchers, Kingfisher & a sinsensis Cormorant. Also, 3+ Siskins, 2 Bullfinches, 2+ Stonechats, Green Woodpecker (male) & 3 Roe Deer.

Tarka Trail , N.Devon….

Now 5 Spoonbills roosting on Isley Marsh.    One Great Egret on Chivener bank , 4 adult and 3 second winter Med. gulls on lower Torridge.    Calling Water rail on Salt pill duck pond…..

East Soar

Fair bit of vis mig this morning, all generally moving west: 260 Skylark, 265 Meadow Pipit, Grey Wagtail, 10 Siskin, 35 Goldfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker (11 so far this autumn), Green Woodpecker & 2 Jay (10 so far this autumn).

River Mole Valley

First Redwing of the autumn in the orchard this morning along with Siskin, Firecrest, Goldcrest, Marsh Tit, Long-tailed Tit,Linnet, Treecreeper and still with us Willow Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher.Meadow Pipits and Red – legged Partridge in the barley earsh. 12 Pied Wagtails feeding amongst the cattle.
