Radford Woods

A short walk around the section of wet woodland below White Lady Road this morning turned up 6 Teal, a Sparrowhawk, 3 Chiffchaffs, 3 Firecrests, 3 Goldcrests, 9 Redwings and 2 Bullfinches.

Fremington Pill….

Glossy Ibis , 3 feeding in stream close to sluice….Spoonbill , adult feeding at end of pill close to Fremington quay.Black tailed Godwits , 15….A stranded Guillemot on the rocks at the quay was attacked by a Crow but managed to make it back to the stream…

Ring Necked Parakeets on The Maer, Exmouth

>10 at the east end of the tennis courts. Flying around as a flock in strong winds and calling loudly.

Skern, Northam Burrows

Lesser scaup still present on the lake at Northam Burrows and I  saw a ringed Curlew on the Skern which would be nice to know a bit more about if anyone knows about the different colour rings ?

Exminster Marsh

Highlights of a walk along the tow path to Turf were 4 mergansers (2m, 2f) south of the lock and a snow goose amongst the Canada geese in the fields close to the lock. Also a hybrid goose (white head and greyish body) amongst the Canada geese close to the car park

Red Kite near Cadover Bridge on December 18, 2023.

One Red Kite watched for 5 minutes about half a mile from Cadover Bridge, on the road between the bridge and the T junction leading to Wotter and Shaugh Prior.

5 Lesser Scaup 3m 2f, 1 Drake Merganser, 23 Goosander 8m 15f, 2 Cormorant, 3 Tufted Duck 2m 1f, 3 Wigeon 2m 1f.

Stover

A duck feeding trip was also fruitful for birds. 3 Goosander (2M, F), M Pochard, 9 Wigeon, 6 Shoveler, 20+ Tufted, 13+ Mandarin & Little Grebe on lake. Also 100+ Mallard, 90+ Coot, 18+ Moorhen Grey Heron & still 10 Mute Swan (Pair & 8 Imm).

Kingfisher, Marsh Tit, 2 Nuthatch, 2 Stock Dove, 2+ Siskin, 12+ Chaffinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker and numerous other small birds.

Soar inc.Southdown Farm

Farmland Bird Count in mild & windy conditions:  770 Skylark, 71 Yellowhammer, 102 Cirl Bunting. Also: 3 Red-legged Partridge, 38 Stock Dove, 3 Snipe, 16 Golden Plover, Redwing, 40 Goldfinch & 190 Linnet.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

An excellent count of 65 Snipe on Blaxton Meadow at high tide, this morning. Also, Firecrest, Grey Wagtail, Water Rail, 5 Teal, 47 Wigeon, Little Grebe, 4 Turnstones, 17 Oystercatchers, Black-tailed Godwit & 8 Greenshanks.

Brixham Harbour to Roundham Head

A lunch time walk along outer quay at Brixham Harbour. Huge numbers of birds feeding off shore. 500+ Kittiwake, 90+ Gannet, winter Med Gull amongst other gulls. 30+ Auk including Guillemot & Razorbills.

5 Great Northern Divers in harbour, 8 Purple Sandpiper, 3 Turnstone & a Rock Pipit.

Broadsands car park, Yellow-browed Warbler, Chiffchaff & Goldcrest. Didn’t look at the sea.

Roundham Head, briefly later. 13 Common Scoter, and a distant diver, probably BT Diver.

Taw at Heanton

Around 40 pintails on the sandbank opposite Heanton Court this afternoon. Also between there and Ashford were a few hundred lapwing, 2 grey plovers, approx. 8 redwing, a goldcrest, a female bullfinch and 2 buzzards flying low over the path. Dunlin,oystercatchers, heron,redshank, curlew, cormorant and little egret also seen

Charles Cross, Plymouth

Over 50 Ring-necked Parakeets at their roost early this morning. Also a Great Northern Diver seen feeding the high tide upstream from Laira Bridge, Plym Estuary.

Bowling Green Marsh

An hour’s scan this morning produced a Peregrine, a Marsh Harrier, 2 Greenshank, 3 Barwits, 5 Snipe, 8 Dunlin, 450+ Avocets, 120+ Pintail, 60+ Shoveler, 10+ Gadwall, 4 Greylags and a Barnacle Goose. Back in Exeter, a Dipper was singing in the Ludwell brook, and a Treecreeper in the Crematorium grounds.

Tavy Estuary Cattle Egrets

Spotted from the train to Calstock above Bere Alston junction at least 10 Cattle Egrets in a field of cows.

Yesterday whilst on my WeBS count at Warleigh Marsh a minimum count of 20 Cattle Egrets in a roost with at least 77 Little Egrets and 3 Herons.

Some very, very late news. A Long-tailed Duck was photographed by a group of kayakers off Jennycliff in Plymouth Sound on 11th November.

On a grey day: Firecrest, Treecreeper, Bullfinch, Grey Wagtail, 3 Stonechats, 150+ Redwings, Sparrowhawk, 2 Ravens, Great Spotted & 2 Green Woodpeckers, 2 Little Grebes, 64 Wigeon, Kingfisher, Water Rail, Jack Snipe, c20 Snipe, 13+ Turnstones, 8 Greenshanks, Common Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Teal & 7 Roe Deer.

Also, recently, up to 3 Blackcaps in my garden (Mount Gould).
