Matford Marsh & Riverside Country Park

A lunch time visit. 90 Wigeon (72 + 18), 26 Teal (15 + 11), 15 Shoveler, 7 Tufted, 26 Mallard and Little Grebe. Mostly on Matford side.

Land birds included 3 Bullfinch, Nuthatch (unusual at Matford), Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2F stonechat, Redwing and Grey Wagtail.

Earlier 9 Golden Plover over house in Alphington.

Ludwell Valley

A lunchtime visit to Ludwell Valley. At least 9 Green Sandpipers huddled together. Good views of a Water Rail. Also Grey Wagtail, Little Egret and Chiff-chaffs.

River Mole Valley

300 Chaffinches with at least 2 Brambling at the feeding station in the barley earsh…………..along with 25 Pheasant,2 foxes and 22 Red Deer.

Nice stroll along the river treated me with close views of a Kingfisher and a Dipper, along with Redwings and a small group of Siskins.

Turtle dove(ringed) in back garden in Milton Abbot PL19 0PB. It was with several of our regular collared doves & fed for several hours this afternoon.

  • The Turtle dove was observed for several hours this afternoon at our bird feeding areas.
  • At first it was with several collared doves, then one of the collared doves became aggressive, however it continued to feed until the light went.
  • It was ringed on both legs.

EDIT-  on Monday night the 1st of January  just 9 miles away an aviary was blown over during the storm and 15 Turtle Doves escaped( a metal ring on each leg)

Plym Estuary & Saltram

An excellent count of c590 Dunlins on the estuary wall on today’s rising tide. Also, Great Northern Diver, Great Crested & 4 Little Grebes, 2 Goosanders (drake & redhead), 32 Mandarin Ducks, 10+ Turnstones, Kingfisher, Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, Bullfinch & 4 Roe deer running for their lives from 2 dogs.

Blackcap Exwick

The cold weather brought the first Blackcap into the garden, seemingly preferring sunflower hearts to fat; also Siskin and Goldcrest.

Braunton area

Ice on the scrapes meant not much to see (1 Black-tailed Godwit yesterday), but after awhile 2 Redshank flew in. A strange sighting was a tired-looking Chiffchaff foraging for food at the side of South Street. Later a couple more Redshank in Velator Harbour, and finally a skulking Common Sandpiper there too. 2 Fieldfares over Braunton car park

River Mole Valley

Farmland birds today included 75 Redwings 70 Starling and 40 Fieldfare on the old meadows.In the orchard 60 Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Firecrest , Goldcrest,GSW,Marsh Tit,Bullfinch, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Long-tailed Tit, Blackcap,Siskin, Chiffchaff and Song Thrush. Stonechat in the bird mix field with Kestrel, 60 Linnet and Snipe.In the woods Woodcock and Crossbill.

Goosander, stover country park

Early morning at stover (sunday) produced 3 goosander 2male 1 redhead female. 2 kingfishers in flight across the lake. 2m and 2fem shoveller still present. 1 heron, numerous coot. 5 moorhens. Away from lake small flock long-tailed tits 1treecreeper. 4 nuthatch., numerous great, coal and blue tits on  the walkway feeder.

Broadsands :~ A trio of Blackcap (1M&2F) feeding on Ivy berries in tree opposite the junction of Sycamore Close, in the first car park Firecrest, Chiffchaff , Goldcrest, 11 Long Tailed Tit, Song Thrush and a flock of Greenfinch.

 

On the sea / beach ~  Red Throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, Great Crested Grebe, Kittiwake, Guillemot, Razorbill, Gannet, two little Egret and Oyster Catcher.

 

Brixham Breakwater :~ Black Throated Diver, fishing along the length of the breakwater, Guillemot, Razorbill, Gannet, Purple Sandpiper and Turnstone.

 

Collaton Fishacre :~ Female Kestrel. Waddaton :~ Female Sparrowhawk

Pied Wagtail flock at Dartington

A flock of around 100 pied wagtails feeding in farmer’s field on Dartington Estate late afternoon today, including a good number of juveniles with pale yellow faces. A handful of meadow pipits were among them.

Additions to Alan’s sightings, on a fine, sunny morning: 2 Jack Snipe, 4 Turnstones, Common Sandpiper, Kingfisher, 7 Goosanders (4 drakes), Green Woodpecker, Stonechat, Grey Wagtail &  12 Roe Deer. Later this afternoon, 8 Mute Swans.
