Avocet – Yelland +1 Photo

Avocet – Yelland

On an early afternoon walk from Instow to Yelland we were treated to a lone avocet among the large numbers of dunlin and golden plovers. There were also plenty of Brent geese, wigeon, teal, several grey plovers, and the odd redshank. There were mallard and a pair of little grebes on the pond, 6 little egret and heron with loads of lapwing in the fields – 3 great crested grebes, 3 eider and a male scaup off the rocks and a couple of sanderling on the shore.

  • It was ringed on both legs.

EDIT-  on Monday night the 1st of January  just 9 miles away an aviary was blown over during the storm and 15 Turtle Doves escaped( a metal ring on each leg)

Braunton area

Ice on the scrapes meant not much to see (1 Black-tailed Godwit yesterday), but after awhile 2 Redshank flew in. A strange sighting was a tired-looking Chiffchaff foraging for food at the side of South Street. Later a couple more Redshank in Velator Harbour, and finally a skulking Common Sandpiper there too. 2 Fieldfares over Braunton car park
