Hopes Nose 6-4-24 late morning

2 Great skuas, 2Manx shearwaters, lots of sandwich terns and close and clear views of 1 gull-billed tern in breeding plumage, when seen as close as this they are a very distinct and obvious bird.

I believe this could be an American bird caught up in storm Kathleen, rather than a Mediterranean bird.  But I will never know.

Dart Estuary

Yesterday late morning, 10 Shoveler (five males) off the mouth of Old Mill Creek, spotted by James Skevington. Almost unheard of on the Dart Estuary, this was presumably a migrant group that had dropped in for a rest.

Ilfracombe Rocks

Sandwich Terns roosting on the rocks behind Lantern hill today before the tide rose and a few briefly moved over to Bendricks opposite the Pier. The first Manx Shearwaters in any numbers, 20 or so a fair way out. Constant movement of Gannets and Common gulls headed west down channel and I had to do a double take sighting a Shelduck bombing along masquerading amoung 3 of the Gannets about 2kms out heading down channel. I wonder if this one will turn up on the Island? The pod of Bottlenose Dolphins seem to have been a around again this this week.

First visit to Fremington Pill and Quay today. Around 8 Black tailed Godwit (males in breeding plumage) on the Pill along with a couple of dozen Redshank and a solitary Greenshank. A pair of Little Egret higher up the Pill towards Fremington and a couple of pairs of Shelduck. Cormorant fishing of the Quay wall. No sign of any Sand Martins on the cliffs, although a fellow birder had mentioned they were there in numbers earlier in the day.
