Ilfracombe Pier

Squally conditions brought Manx Shearwaters and Kittiwake numbers into the hundreds today. About 10 Sandwich Terns still all around Combes coast, mostly around the Harbour and roosting on the RNLI mooring. A Great White Egret in off the sea.

2 Great Skuas headed down channel attacking Gannets and scattering the Herring gulls. Brilliant to see as this is the first ones i’ve seen in ages!

Dartmoor and Tavy Estuary +1 Photo

Dartmoor and Tavy Estuary

At least four Bramblings still present at Postbridge.

Later on the Tavy Estuary another big count of Egrets with at least 36 Cattle Egret and 22 Little Egret. Count not 100% accurate as one turned out to be a pure white Pheasant!  A pair of Egyptian Geese were on the river and only my second Swallow of the year flew overhead.

Hopes Nose 6-4-24 late morning

2 Great skuas, 2Manx shearwaters, lots of sandwich terns and close and clear views of 1 gull-billed tern in breeding plumage, when seen as close as this they are a very distinct and obvious bird.

I believe this could be an American bird caught up in storm Kathleen, rather than a Mediterranean bird.  But I will never know.

Dart Estuary

Yesterday late morning, 10 Shoveler (five males) off the mouth of Old Mill Creek, spotted by James Skevington. Almost unheard of on the Dart Estuary, this was presumably a migrant group that had dropped in for a rest.
