Matford Marsh and Riverside Country Park

A visit to Matford Marsh via Riverside Country Park.

Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, 2 Sedge, 4 Reed Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff and 4 Blackcap, most singing.

20+ House Martin, 10+ Sand Martin, 10+ Swift and 4 Swallow. Most feeding over Matford Marsh.

Green Woodpecker, 2 singing Reed Bunting, Little Grebe and Jay were the other birds of interest.

First Broad-bodied Chaser, 9+ Beautiful Demoiselle and a Hairy Dragonfly.

Finally the Mute Swan family just above The Double Locks has been reduced from 9 to 3 chicks. The view is that there are some large Pike in the canal.

Spoonbill and swifts North Devon

Observed whilst driving over the new Taw Bridge this morning single Spoonbill feeding on the upriver side. Later over Braunton Marsh two Swift seen hawking for insects. A friend reported three overhead Marwood.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

A Bar-tailed Godwit on Blaxton Meadow this morning and a flock of c30 House Martins over Saltram. Also, a Whitethroat and 3 Shags.

Different GS Woodpecker behaviour, Newton Poppleford.

Our resident Greater Spotted Woodpecker has an alternative food supply from the usual peanuts – our bug hotel!

It was seen and photographed yesterday, heard again today. He’s now enlarged the holes in the hotel!

Lundy Island – Sunday 13th +1 Photo

Lundy Island – Sunday 13th

The Puffins are a must see for any visit to ’Puffin Island’ on devonbirds annual trip. Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmar all share the breeding slopes of this seabird city.  All too brief sightings of a female Golden Oriole among the more regular warblers and flycatchers added a bit of excitement for many of us.

Aylesbeare Common

Sunday 12th May. Willow Warbler, Stonechat and Tree Pipit all showing well. A personal highlight seeing 4 Crossbill clearly visible and feeding.

Wembury Red Kites

East Prawle and Hennock Reservoir 11th May

Late posting; 2 whimbrel seen flying inland from the coast and later one seen feeding on worms in short pasture at the edge of the village. Approximately 10 swift over the village; with swallow and house marten.
Evening: one nightjar churring at Hennock Reservoir
