Slapton

Lots of firsts for the year for me today. Sand and House Martins coming through in small groups all day and one Swallow. Reed Warbler and Willow Warbler singing and a single Sandwich Tern. Steady stream of Gannets off shore all going south. Great White Egret at the back of  Ireland Bay in the morning and a bonus daytime Tawny Owl I disturbed by mistake.

Wrafton

Still 3 juv Little Grebes on Wrafton Pond. Several Willow Warblers and Chiffchaffs in song around the pond and reserve. Also walked down the East bank of the Caen hoping for a migrant. Best was the now fairly long-staying Great White Egret on the new scrape south of Sherpa Marsh. 2 Curlews south of the old runway lighting gantry. On the way back a male Whitethroat made a half-hearted display flight near the Chivenor fence line.

Plym Estuary & Saltram.

On a rare and brief visit to the patch in wet conditions, the following were of note. 1 Whimbrel, 1 Curlew, 9 Greenshank  and 2 Common Sandpiper. But the best sighting was off  the lot was an  Otter, swimming and calling in the channel between the old water tower and the yellow gas sign. I watched it for about 10 minutes.
