Masses of Swifts…..Christow

After the wonderful talk by John and Jerry last night at Teign Valley Community Hall, we have noticed even more swifts in Lower Town, Christow (boxes in St James’s Church, and natural crevices in Waterwell Barn). They must have known they were being talked about!

Riverside Country Park and Old Sludge Beds

A cycle down from Exeter visiting Countess Weir, Old Sludge Beds and SWW Treatment Works.

Nothing to extraordinary but 4 Bullfinches, Green Woodpecker, 5  male Reed Bunting (4 singing), 14 Reed Warbler (9 singing), 26+ House Martin around Countess Weir, 3 Swallow (Alphington Brook), 39 Mute Swan on Exe below Countess Weir, was the best of it.

Still plenty of Blackcap singing (6) and Chiffchaff (6). 5 Song Thrush (3 singing).

Butterflies poor. 23 Meadow Brown, was still a poor return for so much grassland. One GV White otherwise.

Dragonflies much better with 20+ Scarce Chaser (19+ males), between Double Locks and end of the Old Sludge Beds. No doubt more if looked harder. Still good numbers of Red-eyed Damselflies.

East Soar

First Swift on its way back south with one flyimg straight out to sea at Bolt Head!. Silver-studded Blue colony count only mustered 12 males & nil females. Would expect c.200 at this time of year. Very few other butterflies – hope they are just late out and not part of an insect collapse1
