Exminster Marsh

A late evening visit as the sun was going down. Surprisingly cold though marsh was covered in clouds of insects, providing rich pickings for the 50+ Swift, a handful of House Martin, Swallows and Sand Martins.

A few singing warblers, 3 Reed, Chiffchaff and Blackcap; 2 Skylark and 2 Reed Bunting.

With the marsh still wet, lots of Little Egret and Grey Heron. And 6 Little Grebe on the lagoon.

Grey Heron, Northam

Several evenings this past week around 9-10pm a Grey Heron (presumably the same bird) has been circulating Northam at dusk and fishing in garden ponds. It is probably looking for easier fishing than in the River Torridge. Nobody else seems to have recorded this from other North Devon towns and villages?

Trew Weir & Salmon Pool

An hour visit this afternoon didn’t produce very much but nice to see 12+ House Martin, which are more local birds than in recent years. Also 2 Swallows. Whitethroat singing by allotments, which might have been Salmon Pool bird, as no sign of that one. 4 Sand Martin at Salmon Pool. Otherwise much as expected.

Plymouth Branch – Nightjar Walk 17th June CANCELLED

Regrettably, Plymouth Branch have decided to CANCEL our proposed follow-up meeting to view Nightjars at Cann Wood, the site no longer being as suitable for group visits as it has been in previous years.  We are actively seeking out alternative sites in the Plymouth area and hope to reinstate the events for next year.

Honey Buzzard on Dartmoor

Honey Buzzard on Dartmoor

Highlight of the field visit to Dunnabridge by the mid-Devon branch of Devon Birds was a Honey Buzzard. It glided in low over the moorland and perched on a fence post quite close to the group. Head size and shape, yellow eye and darkly barred breast with no pale midriff were diagnostic. Eventually it flew off, with drooped wings when gliding, then circled high and drifted off in a SE direction. As such, presumed to be a migrant bird.
