Exminster and Powderham Marshes

A view of estuary from Topsham Ferry toll house, found the Spotted Redshank, showing a little blackening of breast but still predominantly in winter plumage. Greenshank there too.

A cycle across the marsh down Station Road didn’t produce much, so went on to Powderham Marsh RSPB. Green Sandpiper on marsh, 3 Whimbrel in one of the fields.

A few duck, including 2 Tufted and 3 Teal. On the marsh 5 Blackcap (4 singing M), 3 Chiffchaff, Kestrel, Reed Warbler, 3rd cy male Marsh Harrier, Green Woodpecker, 3 House Martin and a single Sand Martin.

Back on to Exminster and a cycle down to Turf. 3 Whimbrel on the estuary. As rain came in so did the Martin’s. Totals of 55+ Sand Martin, 20+ Swallow and 15+ House Martin. And one Swift.

Back over to Station Road, and 14 Cattle Egrets stood in the rain. Then 5 Barnacle Geese flew around and landed by S bend where Cattle Egret were.

On the lagoon were Tufted (M) and 2 Little Grebe.

Bird song was very limited, but 2 Reed Warbler, 3/4 Blackcap and 3 Cetti’s Warbler on the marsh, another 2 Cetti’s above Topsham Ferry Toll House.
