Wrafton pond and local area. +1 Photo

Wrafton pond and local area.

Today at around lunch time I popped down to Wrafton Pond where there were seven or eight Snipe on the far side of the pond and I was lucky enough to catch a quick climpse of a Water Rail. En-route back to my car I spotted two Firecrest, a family of Long-tail tits and a Female Bulfinch.

Caen Estuary

Caen Estuary

Short walk out to Cross banks this aft. Kingfisher hovering above the tidal channel at low tide due to the absence of a suitable perch.

Several birds appear to be suffering now from cold exposure.

This bird which I think may be an overwintering Whimbrel was resting in the weak sunshine on the salting only 10 metres from the public footpath.

Old Torrington Road, Barnstaple

Our blackbird population has gone from zero to well over a dozen in the last 4 weeks. My rear neighbour has a lawn covered in windfalls and this not only attracts the blackbirds but redwing and fieldfare as well. A flock of at least 6 greenfinches have been about as well along with a solitary lapwing which flew over this morning. Yesterday I watched a flock of nearly 100 lapwing fly SW over me whilst stood in Andrew Road.

Supplementary feeding well underway.

Exmouth +1 Photo

Exmouth

The Olive-backed Pipit was still feeding inconspicuously in the leaf litter below the two oak trees either side of the road through Phear Park, 100m up from from the entrance. It was feeding actively most of the time, taking some of the many tiny flies roosting on the tips of the grass leaves (presumably immobile because of the low temperature).

A quick look on the estuary at Mudbank revealed 2 Gadwall, Common Sandpiper and Chiffchaff, plus 130 Carrion Crows and 2 Ravens on the sandbanks.

Wembury

Very cold today on a walk along the coast path at Wembury but very productive.

8 adult Mediterranean Gulls were roosting out on the rocks including a French ringed bird (details awaited). A Fulmar was back on The Mewstone and offshore Kittiwakes, Gannets and a Common Gull were milling around. A Great Northern Diver flew across the Bay before landing on the sea, later it was seen flying up the River Yealm. 2 Razorbills were also feeding close in off the beach.

The Water Pipit was still present along the beach near the sewage pipe, flitty and mobile and chased off at one point by a Rock Pipit.

Finally a pair of Blackcap, a Fieldfare and a Redwing were feeding with around 20 Blackbirds on fallen apples in a Wembury village garden.
