Velator reserve

Been scraping around for something to report for a while now! Today I heard the first returning Black-headed Gull over the reserve, and later saw it (or another) flying along the adjacent river/harbour. Couple of Swifts over Sherpa Marsh and a House Martin over the scrape.

Velator reserve

After seeing a Kingfisher fly downstream from the bridge to the reserve a few day ago, I was even more delighted to see it (or another) in the reserve today. Quite surprising really as the pond is still largely covered in duckweed. Still a few Warblers in song and a delightful day-old Song Thrush chick heading for cover from one of the paths. I ringed three full grown Song Thrushes last Thursday. Perhaps one of them was a parent.

Old Torrington Road Barnstaple

Over the last couple of days there has been an increase in starling numbers as the youngsters join the family groups. Up to 18 seen on Friday. Also two distinct groups of swifts, one of four and the other of two. House sparrow numbers are up as well. With regards the avocet seen on the Taw, as I crossed the new bridge yesterday afternoon, what looked to be an avocet, colouring was right, was down on the large mud bank opposite where the civic centre used to stand.

Fledgling swallows Northam

16 recently fledged swallows on electric power lines at Northam near River Torridge.  Must have been the amalgamation of several broods and clearly recent hot weather has been good for insects and swallows! At least 16 Swift’s feeding at low levels over uncut hayfield nearby.
