Crownhill Down

A Bullfinch male, Goldfinches, Willow Warblers, a Green Woodpecker adult and juvenile along the bridlepath. Swallows, Wheatears, numerous Stonechats and Linnets. Solitary Kestrel and Buzzard over the Down top.

Harleston by Slapton

5 Grey Herons soaring over the hamlet this morning before drifting off west; also 2 Swifts south and 60 Swallows (inc.40 south). In garden Silver-washed Fritillary, Comma, 36 Red Admirals & 16 Peacocks amongst 14 species.

No sign of yellow-billed Tern sp this morning on the high tide. Will look this evening.

Skern, Westward Ho!

A Yellow-billed Tern sp was watched (not by me) on the Skern for 5 minutes over the high tide this afternoon, before flying over the bar. High tide in the morning is at about 07.00.

Blaxton Meadow, Saltram – Cattle Egret

Blaxton Meadow, Saltram – Cattle Egret

This afternoon’s Cattle Egret relocated from the spillway to the largest island on Blaxton Meadow along with six or so Little Egrets and a juvenile Grey Heron. A lucky photograph taken through a tiny gap in the trees above the hide.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

The Cattle Egret still on the sluice at Blaxton Meadow this evening and a Sand Martin over (west). Also, 23 Mandarin Ducks, female Red-crested Pochard, 3 Mediterranean Gulls (2 ad-s + 3rd cy), 4 Greenshanks & a Kingfisher.

Prawle Point seawatch 0630-0945 Sat 15 July

Less than ideal conditions –  strong SW wind but bright periods with squalls passing E offshore. Steady westerly passage of 300+ shearwaters mostly Manx Shearwater and Balearic Shearwater and 4 Sooty Shearwater amongst. Also group of 4 ArticSkua, Gannet, Kittiwake, Guillemot, Razorbill, two Puffin and Shag.

Berry Head sea watch Sat 15th July 07.45-12.00

Conditions a bit too fine but managed: Storm Petrel, 14+ Balearic & 16 Manx Shearwaters, 4+ Arctic Skuas, 2 “Commic” Terns, 5 Common Scoters, 4 (ad-s) Mediterranean Gulls, 3 Swifts, 4+ Harbour Porpoises, 3+ Common Dolphins & a Grey Seal.

Escot Park – Hobby

A Hobby flew over the top fields at Escot Park this morning. Also 2 Ravens. Yesterday, at dusk, a loose flock of 40+ Mistle Thrushes had gathered and were moving through, calling as they went.

1 Recently fledged Willow Tit it couldn’t work out the feeders, 2 Mute Swan, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Common Sandpiper, 7 Great Crested Grebe.

Radford Lake and Hooe Lake

This afternoon after the heavy rain 11 Swifts and 9 House Martins were over Radford Lake. Best, however, was a 1CY Yellow-legged Gull at Hooe Lake. Yesterday at Hooe Lake a Black-tailed Godwit in breeding plumage and a Common Sandpiper were present.

Northam, Skern high tide roost.

At least 77 Mediterranean Gulls, mostly adult birds roosting on the marshes with a scattering of Black-headed Gulls, 2 SandwichTern, 2 Great black-backed Gulls, 1 Common Gull. Also 15 Curlew, 9 Redshank and 1 Whimbrel
