Plymouth Parakeets

Slightly surprised to see a large number of Parakeets at what appears to be their new roost on Charles Cross roundabout last night. Impossible to count as the tree has too many leaves now but 10s. I guess this means they are generally non-breeders?

Escot Park – New Bird +1 Photo

Escot Park – New Bird

Well, a new bird for me on my Escot Park patch, to be precise. The singing Whitethroat finally came close enough for a picture. First heard on the 9th June, it checks in as my 79th species for this area.
Also was pleased to find a Scarce Chaser dragonfly, on the Tale, amongst the resident Banded and Beautiful Demoiselles.

Exminster Marshes/Exeter Canal

Following Steve Cox’s report about Scarce Chasers: there are unprecedented numbers around this year. This afternoon, I counted 92 on Exminster Marshes north (Milbury Lane-Topsham Ferry) and 52 on Exeter Canal (Topsham Ferry to Countess Wear). Also notable was a male Lesser Emperor (Exeter Canal between Topsham Ferry and M5), hundreds of Red-eyed Damselflies and a total of 6 Hairy Dragonflies. Small numbers of Scarce Chasers have also appeared at several sites in SE Devon and the Bovey Basin lately, plus one at Slapton – so they’re probably breeding in more places than we know!

Darts Farm, Goosemoor, Bowling Green & Goat Walk

Most interesting bird wise was 18 Lapwing (13 Adults & 5 Juv). These will be local birds almost certainly. Otherwise 20 Curlew, 2 Blackwit, 3 Teal & 3 Imm Spoonbill. 120 BH Gull a sign the season is changing.

Lots of Scarce Chasers and Meadow Browns too.

Also in Alphington is what I thought was maybe 2 pairs of House Martin. At this site today 7+ active nests, spread over 8 properties. Great to see.
