I know that this is strictly Cornwall, if only just, but it was the first sighting I’ve had of any spring migrants this year! 4 Chiffchaffs and a female Blackcap feeding in the ivy behind the Edgcumbe Arms. At least two of the Chiffchaffs singing.

Exminster Marshes

Although it was high tide in the estuary there were noticeably fewer birds on the marsh today, The most abundant wader was redshank (c60+) with a few curlew. Duck numbers were low with just a handful of pintail, shoveller and mallard. Teal and wigeon numbers reasonably high with about c200 of each. On the lagoon there were 12 tufted duck and 4 pochard amongst the coots.

As the tide fell the estuary attracted c300 black-tailed godwit and a similar number of golden plover. On Greenland Bank there were at least 133 redshank, 40+ bar-tailed godwit and c30 knot. In the channel close to Turf were a few avocet, one greenshank and 2 red-breasted merganser.

In Station Road a chiffchaff sang, a pair of bullfinch were eating buds and a distant skylark sang briefly.
