Old Torrington Road Barnstaple

A couple of house martins zooming around with the swifts today. In the last half hour, an ants nest exploded and all the flying ants took to the skies giving all the gulls including a lot of black headed a free feed. This is earlier than normal. We have a nest in our garden about to add to the melee.

Exminster Marsh

A cycle down to Turf and then a walk around the marsh. Not too much to report, with almost nothing of note from Turf, except 2 Common Sandpiper.

On the marsh itself, 16+ Reed Warbler (4 singing), singing Sedge Warbler on railway line FP, 3 singing Reed Bunting, 7 Chiffchaff (5 singing) & 4 singing Blackcap. Two Bullfinch & a few Skylark the best of the rest.

12+ Swallow, with Juvs, suggesting successful pairs at Turf and at the scrap yard. Two Little Grebe on the lagoon.

Butterflies better, but still low numbers, with 8 spp.

First two Southern Hawkers of year for me, one Broad-bodied Chaser, 4M Scarce Chasers and 500+ Small Red-eyed Damselflies.

Private Garden near Dunchideock.

  • Only five occupied House Martin nests this year at this private site, 1 nest on second brood. Worryingly a 54% drop on 2023 totals.
