Hartland Forest

Late news for last night:

Nightjar walk with Martin Unwin. 16 of us gathered at about 8p.m. for the stroll to the clear fell area. White-breasted Buzzard very obvious in a stand of pines. A couple of Mistle Thrushes, then a Siskin bonanza with several calling, perched and singing. Better was to follow with cracking views of a close-by perched Tree Pipit, and a couple of buzzing Redpoll. Whitethroats were singing, but difficult to see. On the final part of the track before the clear-fell area we found several tiny amphibians: Froglets and Newtlets, which may, or may not, have been Palmate. We all settled in to enjoy the midges and wait for 21.50 for the Nightjars to call. Right on cue a brief call followed by the arrival of a very smart male right in front of us for a minute or so before dropping into the ground cover. A female or two were much further away, and another male churred at length quite close but none of us could see it. Thanks to Martin for choosing a perfect evening for the walk.

Red Kite, Aller Grove

Red Kite flying east along A30 near Aller Grove roundabout.

Have never seen one here before – very distinctive. Tail slightly narrowed so was going somewhere, wasn’t just wheeling around…

Taw Bridge, Barnstaple

A walk across the Taw Bridge yesterday evening as the tide was ebbing. Good numbers of shelduck and their young, something I’ve not seen before. Some good sized broods. Later as we crossed on the old bridge on our way home there were oystercatchers and nearly 200 Canada geese on the rivers edge by where the sports centre used to be.
