Slapton Ley

Sunday 14th.Enjoyable walk around Slapton Ley

  • Night Heron flying from Higher Ley over the bridge and along Slapton ley.
  • 2 Sandwich Turns
  • 5 Buzzards.
  • 2 Grey Herons 
  • Canada Geese in the fields.
  • 4 Great Crested Grebe
  • 15+ Tufted Ducks
  • BlackCaps
  • Chiffchaffs
  • Chetti Warbler
  • Stonechat
  • Dunnock.

Purple Sandpipers feeding on rocks below the sea wall, at the eastern end of the footpath around Capstone Point, Ilfracombe. Nearby, 3 Rock Pipits.

At least 30 House Martins feeding high over the woods early afternoon today. Most moved away in a SW direction.  Only one Swallow seen with them.  Four Common Sandpipers on upper estuary near the dam

Wood Sandpiper near Crediton

Wood Sandpiper today  on a flooded field between Newton St Cyres and Crediton by A377.  Park on layby near Downes Farm but take care.  Also Coot, Little Grebe and good numbers of Sand Martin.  This site has been productive in the last few weeks with records including Shoveler, Wigeon, Mandarin and Tufted Duck but this is the best yet!

Topsham and Bowling Green Marsh

A cycle down to Topsham Recreation Ground to successfully look for the Black-throated Diver. Also 5+ Common Sandpiper, 3rd cy male Marsh Harrier, 33 Redshank, 2 Sand Martin and a Swallow.

On to a sheltered spot on Goat Walk, immediately picking up 2 Sandwich Tern and one Little Tern. The Little Tern was around for a good 2 hours over high tide.

Also from Goat Walk were 62 Curlew, 29 Oystercatcher, a Barwit, 4 Grey Plover, 5 Knot, a Whimbrel and a single Dunlin.

At Bowling Green the 2 2nd cy Spoonbill were present. 7 Teal, 2 Wigeon, a Shoveler, 25+ Sand Martin & single Swallow and House Martin.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

The Curlew Sandpiper still around this morning (in with 12 Redshanks). Also,  7 Greenshanks, 24 Turnstones, 2+ Common Sandpipers, 3 Goosanders (2 drakes), Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker, Siskin, Bullfinch & 6 Roe Deer.

Brandy Head / Lower Otter

2 Ravens, Robins, 4 Shags, 4 Northern Wheatear, stonechats, 4 Swallows , Starlings, Mallards, Mute Swans , Grey Heron, 8 little Egret, Skylarks, Blackbirds, Blue and Great tits and Chiffchaffs .

Dartmoor to South Milton

Princetown area~ Green Woodpecker, Chiffchaff in just about every suitable habitat, Swallow, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Stonechat, 7 Mallard, Pied Wagtail, Song and Mistle Thrush.
Two Bridges towards the Warren House Inn ~ Grasshopper Warbler.
Headland Warren & ChallacombeRed Kite drifted off towards Fernworthy, 5 Wheatear, male Reed Bunting, Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler, 3 Treecreeper, 2 Song Thrush, Nuthatch, 2 Raven and 2 Swallow.
Emsworthy ~ Male Redstart
South Huish Marsh ~ The 3 reported Wood Sandpiper keeping company with a Ruff, 2 Swallow, 4 Heron & 2 Little Egret.

Redwing, Northam

It was nice to see a Winter Migrant this morning. A single Redwing was spotted on horse pasture just down from Bloody Corner.

Lots of summer warblers: Chiffchaff, Willow warbler, Blackcap but no swallows, or sand martins. 2 Blackcaps in my garden feeding on Mahonia berries which is about the only fruit available until June Berries come along.
