Horsey

3 Green Sandpipers flying over Horsey this morning while calling at the same time. A good sized flock of Curlew resting amongst the saltmarsh plants.

West Charleton Marsh

Yesterday early afternoon. Marsh side: 2 Grey Heron, 1 Buzzard, 3 Cirl Buntings, several Reed Warblers, 2 Reed Buntings, 1 Cettis Warbler, Blackcaps, Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Chaffinches, Linnets, numerous Swallows, House Martins and at least 6 Swifts.                   Sea side: 15 Little Egrets, 10 Curlew, 3 Whimbrel and 5 Oystercatchers.

Ilfracombe

Off Capstone Ist CY Yellow-legged Gull, a flock of 22 Mediterranean Gulls headed up channel with more strung out behind. 1 pale Skua sp. Lots of Manxies and 9 Grey Herons headed over the Town.

Exminster Marsh

A cycle down to Turf and then a walk around the marsh. Not too much to report, with almost nothing of note from Turf, except 2 Common Sandpiper.

On the marsh itself, 16+ Reed Warbler (4 singing), singing Sedge Warbler on railway line FP, 3 singing Reed Bunting, 7 Chiffchaff (5 singing) & 4 singing Blackcap. Two Bullfinch & a few Skylark the best of the rest.

12+ Swallow, with Juvs, suggesting successful pairs at Turf and at the scrap yard. Two Little Grebe on the lagoon.

Butterflies better, but still low numbers, with 8 spp.

First two Southern Hawkers of year for me, one Broad-bodied Chaser, 4M Scarce Chasers and 500+ Small Red-eyed Damselflies.

Yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, just beyond The Warren Inn towards Two Bridges I spotted this Sparrowhawk  and about 10 metres away from him/her was this juvenile Cuckoo.

Wembury Point

On the beach at high tide this morning – a Dunlin, a Whimbrel and a 2nd-summer Mediterranean Gull. An additional 10 Mediterranean Gulls moved west between 8:00 and 9:00 involving 6 adults, 3 2nd-summers and 1 Ist-summer.

Upper Tamar Lake.

I repositioned a feeder in a new area and within 40mins there were 2 Willow and 2 Marsh Tits working the feeder, both carrying food.

Private Garden near Dunchideock.

  • Only five occupied House Martin nests this year at this private site, 1 nest on second brood. Worryingly a 54% drop on 2023 totals.

Anchor Wood to Fremington Quay

Numbers of BHG’s on the rise on the Taw and two flocks of Canada Geese numbering about 150 in total. Also a pair of Shelduck with 8 quite large ducklings, a single Curlew at Penhill along with a Common Sandpiper and 2 Redshank flying upriver. Passerine wise; a Goldcrest feeding a fledgling & numerous Blackcap 

hunting for insects among the trees by the lime kiln. A few Chiff-chaff still singing as well as one Whitethroat and a Skylark above Penhill Point.

Bowling Green Marsh and Topsham Rec

A high tide visit to Bowling Green. Ad Br Spotted Redshank still present. 170 Redshank, 130 Blackwit, 120 Curlew, 1 Greenshank and one Dunlin. Also 2 F/Imm Shoveler on marsh.

On Goosemoor another 5 Greenshank and 16 Lapwing (10 Juvs). Two Sandwich Tern and 24 Ad Shelduck from Clyst VP, along with a Common Sandpiper and 8 Dunlin.

Nothing to add from Goat Walk, though 2 Sandwich Tern from Topsham Quay, probably the same.

Topsham Rec, same Spotted Redshank present along with another Common Sandpiper, an adult Common Gull and 3 Mediterranean Gull (2Ad br, & 2nd Summer)

Otherwise Sand Martin, male Bullfinch at Bowling Green. 12+ House Martin there too, as well as a couple of occupied nests near Topsham Quay.

Berry Head Kayak Trip

Berry Head offshore, 6-9am, drizzle

5 Arctic Skuas: 1 Dark phase chasing sandwich tern; group of four passed a few feet above my head by were lost in the mist before I could get brain in gear. No photo because of rain, binoculars no use on moving kayak.

1 Bonxie came to check me out

Labrador Bay

7.00-9.40

A good morning around Labrador Bay.  Whilst scoping the valley I heard movement in a hedge to my left, thinking that a rabbit was just about walk out I was amazed to see a Polecat ! about 3ft away from me. As I went for my phone it was gone.

Another highlight for me  was a female Common Redstart, the first I have seen here,

Other birds seen, 3 Whitethroat, 2 Willow Warblers, 12 Cirl Bunting, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Sparrowhawk circling up high.

North side of Taw Estuary

Photo of 2 of 3 very smart Mediterranean Gulls sheltering from the brisk NW winds this morning.

The single Dark – Bellied Brent Goose which was left behind by the overwintering flock when they departed to their breeding grounds in the spring was feeding on the green algae on the Taw Estuary adjacent to the Bradiford Reserve.

Plym Estuary & Saltram

Three Black-tailed Godwits in summer-plumage, on Blaxton Meadow on the early high tide. Also, 2 Greenshanks, at least 1 Common Sandpiper, 33 Mandarin Ducks, the pair of Shelducks with 6 juvs, the pair of Mute Swans with 2 cygnets, Green Woodpecker & Grey Wagtail.
