At 11am this morning we saw this sparrowhawk on our lawn halfway through feasting on what I identified afterwards as a blackbird – there was the obvious pile of feathers and also a pair of legs! Very sad for the blackbird but this is the way of nature. This is the 2nd pile of feathers we’ve had in about a week, although we didn’t witness the other kill and the feathers suggested a sparrow. We only have a moderate size garden but we get 5 regular blackbirds, and up to 9 in the recent cold weather. We have had both male and female sparrowhawks before and I’m guessing they know all of the local gardens that have bird feeders as much as the smaller birds do.
