A cycle down from Exeter to Exminster Marsh and a circular walk around the reserve. The highlight being finding a breeding Plumage Little Stint on the Discovery Pools.

Other waders were 12 Whimbrel on the estuary from Turf, with 4-5 Curlew. 25+ Oystercatcher and an out of season Avocet. Also on the estuary was a Spoonbill feeding. Also a single Great Crested Grebe.

Very few ducks now, mostly Mallard, but 2 male Gadwall that have been together for a while now. Look like 2nd cy birds. And a female Tufted on the lagoon. Also Little Grebe on the lagoon.

The non breeding Mute Swans seem to be using Exminster, with 36 birds, 22 of them in the Discovery Area. A few breeding adults are paired across the marsh.

Across the marsh there were 14 singing Reed Warblers, 3 Sedge, 7 Chiffchaff, 4 Blackcap and 3 Cetti’s Warblers. 6 Reed Bunting, 2 singing, a few Skylark amongst the commoner passerines.

Only saw 2 Hobby’s together but up to 6 reported by others. 150+ Sand Martin, at least 40 Swift and a few local Swallows. Sparrowhawk and 7+ Buzzard also seen.

Further up the cycle path there were 4 Greenshank off Topsham Recreation Ground. Another 3 Cetti’s singing, one above Countess Weir, another 4 Reed and 2 Sedge Warbler s singing. Also 7 singing Chiffchaff and the singing Willow Warbler near the Double Locks has now been present for 3+ weeks.

Finally 3 Peacock and 4+ Orange Tip.
