The fourth (almost) synchronised Devon Goosander roost count of the winter took place mainly at dawn on 18 and 19 February. Of the 27 sites covered, 15 held at least one roosting bird. The total of 131 (including 42 ad males) was down on the 169 counted in January, though the Dartmoor total of 60 was higher. The main decrease was at Tamar Lakes, from 41 to two. The main sites were Meeth (35), Avon Dam (25), Blackhill Quarry & Venford (16) and Shobrooke (10). The total should be regarded as a (slight?) underestimate to allow for birds present in the county, but not roosting at one of the known sites on 18-19 February. Thanks to all who took part.
