am:- Along the Tarka trail from the Waterside Coffee House to Barnstaple.
Counted a total of 31 Juvenile Shelduck starting with a pair of adults with 5 juveniles in the North Gut & 58 Redshank, a pair of adults with 15 juveniles at Pottington & 1 adult with 11 juveniles between the two bridges at Barnstaple. Also 1 second calendar year Mediterranean Gull.
Always good to see the first juvenile Shelduck on the north side of the Taw Estuary.
Also a flock of c100 Black headed Gulls resting around high tide & it is only the 04 June. A mix of adults & immatures but no juveniles seen amongst them.
Just west of Pottington near Bradiford Reserve outfall at 11:00’ish, 200+ Brent/Brant Geese flew in and settled on the water both sides of the ebbing tide. Interesting behaviour; the honking of the new arrivals seemed to attract honking from the 100’s of Canada Geese on the Bradiford Reserve.
This highly mobile vocal flock of Golden Plover eventually settled down to rest on a sand bank half way between the north & south side of the Taw Estuary.
Good to see this afternoon just before sunset that the pair are still together. The male Red breasted Merganser & the female Goosander. Also present a pair of Goosanders.
Also a male Tufted Duck by Barnstaple Old Bridge.
1 adult Med Gull seen from the Tarka trail.
At the water’s edge in the Taw estuary adjacent to the Bradiford Reserve a curlew with yellow-flagged legs. ( Severn & Avon Vale breeding population?)
An adult single Spoonbill was foraging along the edge of the tidal channel at low tide this afternoon.
After checking the waders on the falling tide opposite Bradiford Reserve this morning I could only find one Curlew Sandpiper.
The others may have already departed to Africa for the winter.
Small flock of 11 Knot at Ashford Strand yesterday morning.
