The current harsh winter conditions have brought many unusual birds into gardens in search of food. However, the meeting of birds not normally associated with garden feeding often means confrontations with more normal garden visitors.

Great Grey Shrike at Fernworthy

Steve Young took these shots of the Great Grey Shrike at Fernworthy Reservoir yesterday afternoon (Sunday 15 November).
The bird was showing well on a steep, clear-felled area on the south side of reservoir. It spent much of its time hovering at height trying to catch bumble-bees.

Great Grey Shrikes on Dartmoor

Christopher Brooking has emailed us to say that on 21 of February, at about 12.00 noon, he enjoyed a very good view of a Great Grey Shrike perched on a bush behind Laughter Tor, south of the Bellever estate on Dartmoor.
Whooper Swans on Braunton Marshes

On 14 February Rob Jutsum came across two wild swans on Braunton Marshes, but they were too distant either to digiscope or identify accurately. Over the course of the next five days, Rob visited the marshes daily hoping that the swans would come within close enough range to fire off a few shots with his camera.
Chiffchaff subspecies – but which?

This intriguingly brown/grey and white Chiffchaff has been present at Clennon Valley since November last year. Unfortunately, it has not positively been heard to call – one of the best ways to separate the various Chiffchaff types.
