During the spring and summer of 2009, the RSPB, funded by Natural England, carried out a full census of Cirl Buntings in order to obtain a revised estimate of their population size and range. This was the first complete survey since 2003 and covered the known range in South Devon and Cornwall, as well as a surrounding buffer area, to determine range expansion.

While carrying out his final visit of the 2009 Cirl Bunting survey in the Churston area, Mike Langman came across this presumed hybrid male Cirl Bunting x Yellowhammer.

This lovely picture of a Snow Bunting was taken by John Lusher on Ryder's Hill, at 515 m one of the highest points on the southern part of Dartmoor.

Seven years ago Mike Langman started to feed a winter flock of Cirl Buntings at Broadsands car park in Torbay. The results were fantastic, with the flock building to 11 birds in 2002 and 31 in 2004. This winter the numbers have peaked at 24.
