Tamar Lakes – updated bird list
16 November 2009
Following the establishment of the new DBWPS hide at Upper Tamar Lake last year, SW Lakes Trust recently asked Harvey Kendall to provide an up-to-date bird list for display in the hide (as well as for their own archives). After several weeks of painstaking research, Harvey has produced an updated list, which is available here as a downloadable PDF.
Harvey writes: "The preamble on the list provides the sources. Any additions to the list – which dates back to some of the earliest-known records from this site in about the early 1920s – would be welcome, so please feel free to contact me with these via info@devonbirds.org. The latest addition was the Whiskered Tern seen during May 2008. The are some surprising omissions, notably Red Kite. Surely one must have flown over the lakes when no-one was looking!"
Harvey is presently negotiating with SWLT to provide a permanently muddy area with scrapes in front of the old hide on the Lower Lake. The Lower Lake hide is little used as the opportunities for birding from it are poor. Harvey will provide an update on any progress made with this scheme.
