Firecrest at Berry Head
23 September 2009
Paul Nunn captured this sphoto of a Firecrest at Berry Head this morning.
Firecrests are scarce (mainly autumn) passage migrants and winter visitors, recorded annually with as many as 200 in good years. They occur mostly along the south coast, like this bird, especially in the Start, Prawle and Soar areas, and on Lundy, with a few inland. There are occasional records from May to August, including singing birds, but breeding has yet to be proven.
