National Cirl Bunting Survey 2009
10 September 2009
During the spring and summer of 2009, the RSPB, funded by Natural England, carried out a full census of Cirl Buntings in order to obtain a revised estimate of their population size and range. This was the first complete survey since 2003 and covered the known range in South Devon and Cornwall, as well as a surrounding buffer area, to determine range expansion.
Initial results from the survey seem promising, indicating a slight increase in population. The organisers are, however, very keen to receive any supplementary records of Cirl Buntings
this year, particularly from the Brixham area.
Whilst many Devon birders submit records annually to the county recorder, it would be very useful if this year these observations could be submitted before the end of October so they can be used in the survey analysis. Thus, if you do have any records of Cirl Buntings from this year, please email them, including grid reference and date, to Julia Harris, Data Manager/Assistant County Recorder or by post to 6 Clonway, Yelverton, Devon PL20 6EG.
Many thanks.
