Get involved with mammals in 2009

11 February 2009

Want to learn more about the ecology and conservation of mammals in the UK?

If so, there are plenty of opportunities to help in the survey and long-term monitoring of many of our mammal fauna. This can range from helping to monitor the long-term populations of dormice within our ancient woodlands to help surveying for dolphins along our beautiful coasts.

Click on the link below to visit the Devon Mammal Group website for a full list of UK organisations that are undertaking this exciting work.

It has been nationally recognised that without the committed participation of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers much of the information observed, collated and analysed over the years would not have been achieved and, as such, an increasing understanding of our mammal fauna within the UK would have be impossible.

Many of the organisations listed on the Devon Mammal Group website lead in national training events to help people fully understand the ecology and conservation needs of many target species. This in turn helps to improve methods of survey and monitoring that are vital to obtaining statistically robust scientific data that are needed to help us recognise and understand potential or current problems and therefore help the species in question.

So, if you have a few spare hours, days or even months, please get in touch with one of the organisations to get involved locally and become part of a national network of people dedicated to protecting the UK’s marvellous mammals.
