Help on Picture Submission

Picture submission for Recent Sightings and Gallery

Picture files for the website should be sent to editors@devonbirds.org either as uncompressed JPEG or RAW files, preferably unedited and at the native resolution they were originally shot at.

Each picture sent should have a 'filename' in the following sequence:

species-place-date-your name/initials-number – a number should be
included if there is more than one shot in the sequence.

Thus, a Mediterranean Gull seen on the Taw Estuary on 1 August 2009 by Mike Langman would be tagged:

MedGull-TawEst-010809-ML-01

or if you know the age of the bird then this would be:

MedGull1stW-TawEst-010809-ML-01

Photographs should be accompanied by a brief description of the bird and where it was seen, along with any other important or interesting information and background details about the circumstances, location, weather etc.

Please note that the use of pictures and stories and other material is entirely at the discretion of the editors.

Filename limitations:

We know that some computer operating systems restrict the number of characters that can be used in a filename.

The only way to live within this limitation and still provide as much information as possible is to shorten the species name to a well-known or obvious abbreviation, or use the BTO two-letter code (though not our preferred option). Then use a shortened place name and initials (e.g. your DBWPS observer initials). This can really help to shorten the filename and keep the character number below 25.

Note that since Windows XP supports long filenames up to 256 characters, this does not apply to Windows users. Also, this website can receive files with any character string up to 256 characters in length.

If your system places restrictions that create difficulty for you, simply put all the required information into your email text and we will add it to your short filename.
