A second picture of Black Brant among the wintering Brent Geese on the Exe Estuary.

Notes:

County Recorder Mike Langman writes: “The bird is a strong candidate
for Black Brant, showing the classic clean white flank patch with
blackish scallops. The white necklace is very big and clear, and the
bill and head look more substantial than the surrounding Brent Geese,
which is a good identification feature. The mantle and scapulars are
darker than the surrounding Brent Geese; however, some Black Brants are
darker than this, showing little contrast between this area and the
neck and breast. The belly colour on some Black Brants is often darker,
again perhaps not showing the contrast that this bird does.”
