About Us
The Devon Bird Watching & Preservation Society (DBWPS) is a county bird society with a long and distinguished history dating back to 1928.
Primarily dedicated to the study and conservation of wild birds, its activities include observational recording, fieldwork, reserves management, publishing and the exchange and sharing of data with other county and national conservation groups.
This web site is the latest publishing venture by the Society as it works to expand its audience and further the cause of conservation within the county.
Society members have been organising and promoting the study and conservation of birds for 79 years and presently submit over 50,000 bird records every year for inclusion in the society's database. These, and the results of more formal fieldwork and research, are reported in the society publications: a newsletter (The Harrier) published six times a year, the twice-yearly colour journal Devon Birds (known until 2006 as Devon Birds Magazine) and the award winning annual Devon Bird Report (now published as the third issue of the journal Devon Birds). The data collected by Society members are also shared with other bodies for the purposes of furthering conservation within the county and nationally.
